Seamless Set Recreation
for a Sci-Fi Series

3D scanned sci-fi set environment

SkyMesh 3D was brought in to digitally recreate a physical set for a sci-fi series, enabling seamless transitions between practical footage and full-CG environments. Using our high-resolution 3D scanning pipeline, we delivered an accurate, production-ready digital twin of the hero set—optimized for visual effects integration in Unreal Engine and other VFX pipelines.

"The goal wasn’t to just scan a set—it was to create an asset so precise, the audience wouldn’t know where the camera ended and the CG began."
Challenge

The production needed to extend physical sets digitally without disrupting continuity. Traditional photogrammetry wasn’t feasible due to lighting constraints and time limits during location breakdown. The asset had to work in real-time rendering environments and match physically accurate dimensions to existing camera tracks.

Solution

We deployed structured-light scanning gear on-set, capturing geometry and texture data with sub-millimeter precision. The scan was decimated and cleaned using RealityCapture and ZBrush before being UV-unwrapped and optimized in Cinema 4D. A custom Redshift material pass was provided for look development, while a game-ready version was delivered for Unreal Engine integration.

Results

The 3D set reconstruction reduced post-production compositing time by 40%. Artists were able to extend shots, simulate destruction, and render alternate lighting passes without reshoots. Our pipeline also enabled previews in virtual production stages prior to final rendering.
